Last month, we were proud to sponsor and contribute to the largest mining industry health and safety event in the southern hemisphere – the Queensland Mining Industry Safety & Health Conference.
This important event brings together leaders, regulators, workers, and innovators to advance safety across Queensland’s mining sector. Our support reflects our commitment to industry leadership while strengthening our reputation and position as a company that drives safe and sustainable operations.
More than 20 team members from across Cowal, Ernest Henry and Group attended, highlighting the breadth of our commitment to learning and sharing best practice in safety. As part of the organising committee, we played a key role in shaping the event, with many of our people contributing across workshops, panels, presentations, and awards, including:
Workshops and panels
Cowal Gold Operations Manager Sustainability Greg Coase co-presented the Best Practice Incident Management Workshop alongside the Queensland Mine Rescue Operations Manager, and later joined a distinguished panel of senior inspectors, regulators, industry representatives, and company leaders. The panel discussion, Health & Safety in the Queensland Mining Industry – Back to Basics for a Stronger Future, highlighted the importance of fundamentals such as planning, communication, supervision, training, leadership visibility, and disciplined risk management.
Keynote engagement
Greg interviewed NRL star Cameron Munster in the session Beyond the Field: Leadership and Legacy, exploring lessons from elite sport on resilience, teamwork, culture, and purpose.
Recognition and awards
We proudly sponsored and presented the Health Innovation Award. Our team from Ernest Henry Operations showcased their safety innovation, earning a Highly Commendable recognition. We were also honoured to receive an award for over five years of continuous sponsorship and support of the event.
Community impact
The event also raised $39,000 for CAP Rescue, a helicopter rescue service that provides lifesaving, around-the-clock aeromedical care — at no cost to patients — where and when it’s needed most. Several team members enthusiastically participated, winning items such as Casey Stoner’s racing boots, a Melbourne Storm jersey, a V8 supercar experience, and the major raffle prize — showing that safety leadership and community support are integrated.
The conference reinforced that while technology and environments evolve, the foundations of safety remain constant: planning well, leading visibly, training effectively, and supporting each other. We’re proud to stand alongside our peers in ensuring these principles continue to guide a safer future for Queensland’s mining industry. Check out the conference highlights here.
