FlexCrew Program – Natalie Kelly, Carling Henderson, Eliza Jagusiak, Lauren Spicer and Lisa Ellsmore
Excellence in Diversity Programs and Performance

The FlexCrew Program was developed in response to a consistent workforce imbalance at Northparkes Operations, where women represented 16 to 17 percent of the workforce despite an evenly split local community. It was identified the issue was not a lack of capable women, but structural barriers embedded in traditional mining work design. Operational rosters, particularly 7/7 arrangements with 12‑hour shifts, unintentionally excludes people whose lives did not align with inflexible, full‑time work, with women and those with caring responsibilities most affected.

Launched in April 2025 as a two‑year pilot, FlexCrew deliberately removed rostering as a barrier by redesigning operational roles around flexibility rather than fixed patterns. Four fixed‑term roles in the Ore Processing Department were created without predefined rosters, allowing employees and leaders to co‑design working arrangements that balanced individual circumstances with operational needs. In doing so, the program reframed flexibility as an operational strength, demonstrating that inclusive work design can support safety, performance and team cohesion while positioning flexibility as a driver of inclusion, resilience and long‑term operational success.

Taleigha (Tilly) Everingham-Potts, MEM Auto Electrician
Exceptional Tradeswoman/Operator/Technician

Driven by a desire to live beyond the ordinary, Tilly began her working life pursuing creative and unconventional interests before building a strong foundation as an optical dispenser in a family‑run business. While that role showed her the power of small contributions, she was drawn to something more challenging and immersive. In 2018, Tilly took a leap into the mining industry, commencing an apprenticeship as an Automotive Electrical Technician with Newcrest at Cadia Valley Operations. Starting in 2019 marked a defining turning point, launching a career that challenged her technically and personally, often as the only female tradesperson on the workshop floor. With the support of a female mentor, Tilly developed resilience, confidence, and a strong appreciation for the importance of support networks in male‑dominated environments.

Over four and a half years underground at Cadia, including three as a breakdown Auto Electrician, Tilly thrived in high‑pressure, fast‑paced conditions but ultimately recognised the need to prioritise wellbeing and balance. Returning to her hometown, she joined Evolution Mining at Northparkes, where transitioning to surface Light Vehicle work reinvigorated her passion for learning and leadership. Now in her seventh year in mining, Tilly is undertaking a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology to become dual‑traded. Balancing study, career progression, and wellbeing, her journey reflects continuous growth, adaptability, and a commitment to paving the way for other women in trades while maintaining a sustainable work/life balance.

Stephanie Penales, Group Senior Advisor ESG & Social Responsibility
Exceptional Young Woman

Steph began her career journey studying international relations, driven by a passion for sustainability, equity and communities, without imagining that mining would ultimately provide her sense of purpose. Her academic focus on policy, development and community‑led solutions led her to apply for an Environmental Vacation Student role at our Cowal Gold Operations. Although unsuccessful, the experience opened an unexpected door: she was later invited to interview for Evolution’s first Sustainability Graduate role. Securing that position was both daunting and rewarding, and over time it expanded into a diverse and impactful sustainability portfolio.

Over the past five years, Steph progressed to Senior Advisor ESG and Social Responsibility, gaining experience across ESG engagement, evolving legislation, First Nations partnerships, reporting and major projects. Key milestones included leading Evolution’s FY23 Sustainability Report and Modern Slavery Statement, coordinating the company’s inaugural First Nations Summit, and helping deliver its first Reconciliation Plan. Alongside professional growth, Steph has developed resilience, adaptability and a values‑driven leadership style that prioritises care and inclusion. Today, the resources sector gives her purpose, connection and the opportunity to advocate for cultural inclusion, sustainability and social impact for the benefit of industry, communities and future generations.

We’re incredibly proud of these achievements and congratulate our finalists for their valuable contributions to Evolution, the mining industry and expanding opportunities for women in the sector.
