Red Lake makes a splash at annual Norseman Festival

Last month, more than 40 members of our Red Lake Operations team rolled up their sleeves to volunteer at one of the community’s biggest annual events, the Norseman Festival.

Held from 17 to 19 July, the festival brought together community volunteers, local organisations, the Municipality of Red Lake and local mining companies for a family-friendly summer weekend featuring live music, food vendors, children’s attractions and community fundraisers.

Following the retirement of the festival’s long-time volunteer organisers, this year’s event was made possible through a strong partnership between Evolution and neighbouring Kinross Great Bear and West Red Lake Gold mines. The collaboration, combined with the dedication of community volunteers, ensured the much-loved festival could continue.

Red Lake Operations Vice President John Penhall said that event would not have gone ahead without the support of volunteers, industry partners and our active involvement. He said:

“From early planning efforts to volunteering throughout the weekend, the commitment of our Red Lake team helped make the festival a success and strengthened our connection to the local community.”

Our volunteers supported a range of activities, including the gold panning experience, petting zoo and the always-popular dunk tank. The dunk tank alone raised more than $1,200 for the Red Lake Food Bank.

Several members of Red Lake’s Site Leadership Team took their turn in the dunk chair, including General Manager Kyal Hunter, Maintenance Manager Kyle Borup, Processing Manager Amber Adams and Mining Manager Todd Poitras. They were joined by Red Lake Mayor Fred Mota and leaders from other local businesses.

The festival honours Red Lake’s rich aviation heritage and is named after the Noorduyn Norseman aircraft, which played a significant role in the development of Red Lake and the surrounding mining region. In fact, Red Lake was once recognised as one of the busiest floatplane hubs in the world!

Today, the Norseman Festival is one of the region’s premier tourism events, supporting local businesses while celebrating the history, culture and traditions that helped shape the community. Through community events, historical displays and aircraft fly-bys, the festival preserves and shares the stories of Red Lake’s mining, aviation and community heritage with future generations.

Thank you and congratulations to all of our Red Lake volunteers.
