Partnering with Caterpillar to reduce emissions

At Evolution Mining, we recognise climate change is a global issue requiring sustained action to ensure a positive future for the environment, communities and business. Our approach is to focus on practical measures to reduce emissions by building effective partnerships and strengthening our people’s capabilities to shape our preparedness for the future.

We have proudly participated in the Caterpillar Pathways to Sustainability Program for more than two years, with our membership providing pathways and opportunities to support our net zero commitment.

The program is designed as a four-year experience to enable Caterpillar customers and dealers to prepare for the energy transition and its impacts on people, process, product, technology and infrastructure.

It consists of annual learning events and holistic learning sessions, for example, Project Advisement (working with electrification experts to simulate a site’s energy transition requirements and identify energy optimisation opportunities), and early access to new Cat fleet models.

Some of our achievements and outcomes in the last 12 months include the following.

  • Project Advisement commenced at our Ernest Henry Operations in October 2025 – the first underground mine in the world this project is being run on. Project Advisement is an opportunity for Pathways participants to work together with Caterpillar and its simulation tools and subject matter experts (SMEs) to undertake site analysis to help determine potential optimal alternatives for:
    • ways to reduce emissions with current technologies and offerings.
    • modelling of zero exhaust-emission trucks on haul routes.
    • simulation of up to two separate years, to estimate:
      • Fleet energy consumption and power demand.
      • Charging infrastructure placement and sizing.
      • Fleet productivity, sizing, and selection.
  • In November 2025, team members participated in the second learning event in Tucson, Arizona. It provided a forum for discussions on the impacts and opportunities of the evolving energy landscape. Caterpillar provided updates on their surface and underground solutions and technologies, including a behind the scenes tour of their testing and development activities. Learnings included how we can further leverage Caterpillar’s open pit and underground solutions to help our emissions reduction targets.
  • We commenced Supplier Relationship Meetings (SRMs) – with aim to help drive productivity gains, reliability focus, and value improvements for Evolution. These meetings include a focus section on the Pathways to Sustainability Program.
  • Sharing information and initiatives through our Net Zero Emissions Community of Practice. This forum enables key stakeholders from different operations and functions to share decarbonisation initiatives and information to drive replication opportunities, improved innovations and enhanced improvements across the business.
  • We launched monthly internal meetings for Pathways to Sustainability Program team members with the aim to monitor initiatives and provide updates on the program to other internal stakeholders.

Paul Robbins, Lead Asset Effectiveness, attended the second learning event in November and said it was a great opportunity to see how the program has progressed, while connecting with existing and new participants.

“The opening set the scene, focusing on the progression of the problem to solve and where we’re headed, which supported the importance of social license and pressures on ESG, the economic advantages of electrification over fuel and how the integration of autonomy and electrification will maximise value,” Paul said.

“These are key drivers for any mining company, with Caterpillar’s customer-back focus aimed at helping customers like Evolution with their energy transition and journey, noting ‘every site is different’ and ‘every pathway will be unique’.”

In 2026, we plan to:

  • progress Project Advisement at Ernest Henry Operations;
  • deploy diesel electric loader(s) at some of our Australian operations;
  • leverage Caterpillar bridging strategies through their Site Solution Model (Fleet Management);
  • attend the third learning event in Tucson, Arizona to see what’s coming next; and
  • collaborate and share knowledge through internal meetings and stakeholder engagements.
