Our Red Lake Operations continues to invest in the future of mining in Northwestern Ontario through the completion of this year’s Mikinaak MineExcell Entry‑Level Mining Training Program.
Over 10 weeks, participants joined rotating crews to gain experience in our underground and processing operations, along with safety training, cultural programming and career‑readiness learning.
At the closing ceremony, Red Lake Operations General Manager Operations Kyal Hunter thanked the internal teams, contractors and funding partners and emphasized how programs like this play a critical role in shaping career pathways.
“Having opportunities to learn different parts of the operation early on gives participants a real taste of the mining industry and helps them understand where their strengths and interests lie,” he said. “That exposure can be career defining, and it’s great to see these participants building confidence, skills and a clearer vision for their future.”
The program was created in 2023, with the goal to create pathways into sustainable mining careers, recognizing the vital role our industry plays in the local economy.
After receiving Traditional Teachings from local Knowledge Keepers, Lawrence Angeconeb (a program alumni and current service operator at Red Lake Operations) and Cynthia Imbeault from the Red Lake Indian Friendship Centre, participants shared their enjoyment and gratitude for the program, calling out the exposure to meaningful work and welcoming crews as major highlights.
Funded by the Ontario government, this year the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord played a key role in screening applicants and supporting our Red Lake Operations in successfully delivering the program. The opportunity is further strengthened through support from community and industry partners, including Major Drilling Canada and Byrnecut.
We are proud to support community partnerships, builds skills locally, and helps shape the next generation of mining professionals.
Congratulations to the 2026 cohort.
