Across our operations, the use of innovation and technology is integral to keeping people safe and productive. Removing people from the face or the line of fire reduces the risk of injury, while often improving productivity. In FY25, we implemented geotechnical radars and seismic monitoring systems to track our operations and safe production. We continue to actively use drone technology both above ground and in underground operations to gain improved data and access without people having to enter higher risk areas. We are also exploring and utilising other technologies, such as satellite and smart technology for surveying, design and environmental monitoring. This allows for more predictive analysis, design with artificial intelligence (AI) and laser scanning technology for more accurate and efficient shaft inspections.
At Northparkes, we commenced trialling imaging technology to measure particles from supernova explosions, called ‘muons’, to generate images of the block cave. It is intended this muon tomography and analysis will provide a better understanding of what our cave shape looks like, where the orebody has or has not caved, and insight into the density model.
Commencing installation in December 2024, and with the first muons detected in February 2025, the trial is still in its infancy. However, gaining an understanding of the distribution and variability of the materials underground allows us to monitor the conditions underground, remain agile and adjust our draw strategy accordingly, minimise inrush and keep our people safe. We are also reviewing how this can be replicated across other sites following the completion of the trial and analysis of the outcomes.
