At the start of 2024, the Goldfields region in Western Australia experienced significant power outages, affecting power supply and water consumption for thousands across several days.
In response, our Mungari Operations reduced water consumption and operated with intermittent power during peak periods, until generators were restored.
We also worked with community groups and local government to help during and after the blackouts. Many Coolgardie residents lost power for 37 hours, with soaring temperatures forcing them to throw away food and refrigerated items. Through our partnerships, we were able to donate meals from our Mungari Village to Meals on Wheels, who worked to assist the most vulnerable residents during this stressful time. Additionally, we joined forces with the local council and the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service to organise a barbecue for those affected in the town.
Crisis Response is a key material topic for our business, and Mungari continues to demonstrate the significance and impact of supporting communities during crises.
