Cowal celebrates 20 years at Hearts of Gold Festival

Cowal continued its 20 years of operations celebrations with the West Wyalong community at the 2025 Evolution Mining Hearts of Gold Festival last weekend.

Thousands of people from West Wyalong and the New South Wales Central West attended the three-day festival.

On Friday evening, around 30 Cowal employees, including site leadership and long-standing employees attended the Golden Gala Dinner at the picturesque Regal Estate vineyard.

On Saturday morning, the Cowal town office held an open day as part of the Brunch and Browse along Main St. With exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of site, competitions and giveaways, the community had the opportunity to learn more about life at Cowal.

The main event was the Family Fun Night on Saturday evening, attended by over 4,000 people. Locals enjoyed rides, food vans, fireworks and live music including a headline performance from internationally renowned band Furnace and the Fundamentals, along with music from local bands.

In his address before the headline act took to the stage, Cowal Gold Operations General Manager Joe Mammen shared his thanks to all who attended the festival and had supported Cowal over the decades.

“Over the past two decades, Cowal Gold Operations has grown from an ambitious idea into a thriving operation – and more importantly, into a committed part of the West Wyalong and wider Central West community.

“We know that being a good neighbour means more than just doing business – it means investing in local lives, supporting local causes, and being part of the day-to-day fabric of the community. That’s something we take seriously – and something we’re incredibly proud of.

“This Hearts of Gold Festival has been a great way to celebrate our 20-year milestone with the people who’ve been part of the journey – our neighbours, friends, families, and community partners.”

The festival concluded with a Family Colour Run and barbecue breakfast on Sunday morning.

Over the past two decades, empowering communities and fostering local connections has been tantamount to the Cowal team. Approximately 65% of Cowal’s workforce resides locally within the Bland, Forbes and Lachlan shires.

Cowal has paid around $326 million in royalties since it commenced operations in 2005, and $200 million under Evolution’s ownership since July 2015. In FY25, Cowal spent over $200 million regionally with local businesses and through salaries.

Cowal’s current mine life is to 2042, supported by the Open Pit Continuation Project.

The Evolution Mining Hearts of Gold Festival is a biannual community celebration held in West Wyalong that commemorates West Wyalong’s successful Guinness World Record attempt for the most people simultaneously gold panning in 2023.

Keep an eye on Cowal’s Facebook page for more content from the weekend in the coming weeks. Thanks to all who volunteered and assisted with organising this successful event.

Here’s to the next 20 years!
