What started as a fun day on the green has grown into something truly transformative for students at West Wyalong High School. Following the success of the 2024 Survivor Golf Series, which we proudly hosted, more than $21,000 was raised by the local community to support youth mental health initiatives. That generosity has now brought meaningful, lasting change to the school community.
In July 2025, Evolution partnered with wellbeing organisation Kick On to deliver a week of emotional intelligence workshops and co-create a mindful mural on school grounds — all designed to equip students with tools for emotional wellbeing, self-awareness, and resilience.
More than 60 year 7 and year 8 students took part in engaging, practical workshops led by Kick On facilitators Drew and Melody. Students explored everything from naming emotions and managing difficult moments to understanding empathy and building confidence in problem-solving.
“Seeing students connect so deeply with the content — and with each other — was a real highlight,” said Melody. “The sessions weren’t just about learning; they were about creating safe spaces for students to reflect and feel seen.”
Alongside the workshops, more than 40 students helped paint a student-designed mural under the guidance of mural artist and teacher, Sharon Wedel. The mural, which now features prominently at the school, celebrates West Wyalong’s history, native wildlife, and local identity, while also offering students a space to pause, reflect, and regulate their emotions.
“It’s more than just a beautiful wall,” said one teacher. “It’s a space students can return to throughout the day when they need a reset.”
The project also saw over 280 students and staff enjoy a barbecue lunch provided by the Cowal team — rounding out a week full of colour, conversation, and community care.
Kick On’s unique approach to wellbeing is deeply grounded in connection, creativity, and compassion — all of which were on full display during the visit.
“We’re so grateful to Evolution Mining and the people of West Wyalong,” said Drew from Kick On. “This partnership shows what’s possible when a community comes together with heart.”
From teeing off in support of mental health, to painting walls that tell a story — this community-led effort has created a lasting impact for West Wyalong’s young people.
