Mt Rawdon hosts graduates for rare mine closure opportunity

Last month, Environment graduates, Annika and Claire, visited our Mt Rawdon Operations to gain firsthand experience in rehabilitation and mine closure activities.

It provided a great learning opportunity about the landmark mine closure project currently underway at Mt Rawdon, with the aim to convert the gold mine into a sustainable, low-cost, large-scale pumped hydro power station.

The Project is progressing through feasibility studies and related approval processes. If successful, it will become one of Australia’s most advanced and capital-efficient pumped hydro facilities, supporting Queensland’s renewable energy targets, with the capacity to generate 20,000 megawatt hours of electricity each day.

Annika and Claire also assisted with monitoring key projects in Mt Rawdon’s future rehabilitation plans including wetland trials, sampling groundwater bores and trial cover pads at the Tailings Storage Facility.

They also brought new ideas on environmental data management and reporting automation which they have developed throughout their rotations at other Evolution operations.

Senior Environment and Mine Closure Advisor at Mt Rawdon, Paul Dielemans, said that the graduates’ visit to Mt Rawdon was invaluable for all involved.

“Such cross-site visits are of tangible benefit to visiting graduates as they see how Evolution mine sites respond—either similarly or differently—to various environmental and regulatory challenges.

“The visits facilitate a cross-pollination of ideas across sites that are beneficial to both graduates and site personnel, as new information and contact networks are created.”

Annika and Claire both expressed their gratitude to the Mt Rawdon and Group Environment team who enabled this learning opportunity.

“Mt Rawdon was a fantastic opportunity to expand my technical knowledge, including being involved with several environmental studies looking to innovate the mine closure space,” Claire said.

“I studied Mt Rawdon as a case study at university,” said Annika. “And so, I will be looking back on this trip as a career highlight.”

In 2025, the Mt Rawdon Operations Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plan (PRCP) was approved by the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI).

In April, Evolution was pleased to welcome the interest of the Queensland Government, with the announcement of a $50 million investment to support the Project through Government-owned CleanCo Queensland (CleanCo). This funding aims to progress the Project towards a final investment decision, facilitating detailed feasibility studies, environmental assessments and design work.
