Earlier this month, team members from our Mungari Operations took to the footy oval, contributing to the $50,000 raised total to support local families in the mining industry during times of crisis.
The Kalgoorlie Masters Mining Carnival is held annually on the first Saturday of August, where the WA School of Mines and mining companies come together for a day of friendly modified Aussie Rules football games.
Mungari’s amateur teams were lead by coach Graeme Borchet, Supervisor Paste Operations, and raised $5,000. The modified rules allowed for all to participate, regardless of age, gender or experience.
Operations Manager Shane Barker has organised the event for the last five years and shared his enjoyment of the day increases year-on-year.
“The games are always conducted with a positive attitude,” said Shane. “But the best part is the sizable donation raised for a good cause, and that the stories live on in the post-game celebrations – and become increasingly exaggerated as the evening goes on!” The event was organised by the Kalgoorlie Masters Football Club to raise funds for Miner’s Promise, a charity agency that specialises in trauma-informed physical, emotional and financial support to families and communities in mining, energy and resources sectors enduring difficult times.
As the only permanent Masters Club in the Goldfields, the Carnival also allows Kalgoorlie Masters FC the chance to play footy without travelling away or inviting others Masters teams to the region. Many players, regardless of the company they represented jumped in with other teams to help make up numbers for each game, in the spirit of teamwork, fun and community spirit.
