Mt Rawdon Operations is an open pit gold mine situated 75km south-west of Bundaberg, Queensland, owned and operated by Evolution since 2011. Mining operations concluded in FY25, marking the end of active extraction after 25 years. Since then, our workforce of around 120 people has transitioned to processing existing stockpiles, scheduled to be completed in FY26.
As the mine approaches closure, we are pursuing a transformative legacy project alongside ICA Partners: the Mt Rawdon Pumped Hydro Project. The Project aims to be the first working gold mine in Australia repurposed as a power station and energy storage facility, with the capacity to generate 20,000 megawatt hours of electricity each day.
CleanCo Queensland (a government-owned energy corporation) aims to invest in the Project to help progress towards a final investment decision. The Project is progressing through feasibility studies and related approval processes. If successful, it will become one of Australia’s most advanced and capital-efficient pumped hydro facilities, supporting Queensland’s renewable energy targets.

Closure and rehabilitation planning
In 2025 the Mt Rawdon Operations Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plan (PRCP) was approved by the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI).
The closure vision for the site is to repurpose the Mt Rawdon gold mine open pit to a lower reservoir supporting a state-of-the-art low cost, pumped hydro electricity generating facility. For the remainder of the site the intent is to rehabilitate the mining disturbed areas to a post mine land use in keeping with the surrounding local area. This will include areas of open woodland and low intensity grazing, achieving a post-mining landscape that is safe for humans and wildlife, stable, and non-polluting.

Incorporation of the proposed Mt Rawdon Pumped Hydro Project areas is being worked on as the Project design is firmed up so keep a look out for future updates to the interactive web viewer.
Mt Rawdon is currently trialling some innovative rehabilitation projects as part of its closure strategy including a constructed wetlands water treatment project and a tailings storage facility cover trial project.
Did you know we have partnered with a used tyre recycler and successfully transported over 1,000 large mining tyres to their thermos-vacuum recovery facility for recycling and reuse into various hydrocarbon products such as recovered carbon black showcasing innovative and environmentally friendly recycling techniques?
Land Rehabilitation and Natural Capital Enhancement Project
In partnership with the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) and Traditional Owners, we plan to integrate cultural burning, native seed harvesting, and natural capital enhancement into mine rehabilitation and revegetation efforts over a three-year period on Swindon Station, on which the mine is situated. Stay tuned to read more about this exciting project as it progresses.
We are committed to building strong and enduring relationships with our local communities, grounded in respect, honesty, two-way dialogue and transparency.
Our Mt Rawdon community
Mt Rawdon Operations sits within North Burnett Regional Council area, and the local communities of Mt Perry, Gin Gin, Biggenden and Gayndah. Community engagement
Mt Rawdon strives to work closely with its neighbours, keeping communication open and honest. As part of our transition from an active mining site to a pumped hydro project we routinely hold community information cessions at least twice a year which are open to all neighbours, local community members and interested stakeholders, as well as individual meetings with neighbours and local businesses held throughout the year. From time-to-time special tours have been hosted showcasing the operations.
