Partnering with AusEarthEd to support a pipeline of geologists, environmental scientists and engineers

The future of the geology workforce is changing across the industry. As we become more sensitive to, and look to mine, more challenging ore bodies we need to improve how we tackle and manage them. This starts with the geology. Unfortunately, there is a crisis in the pipeline of geologists – approximately half of the geology teaching capacity in universities across New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria has been lost in the last five years and geology content in school curricula is under review.

To reflect our commitment to geology education, we have for the third year supported Australian Earth Science Education (AusEarthEd) to implement education programs in NSW schools and drive a future pipeline of geologists. Along with other platinum sponsors and supporters, we are proud of the achievements of the program. They aim to inspire confidence in, and a passion for, earth and environmental science.

In 2024 the organisation worked with around 1,300 students and 300 educators with more than 190 hours of work delivered across NSW. Students participated in incursions and excursions to core libraries, and year 12 earth and environmental science students were provided with free revision webinars. Educators were supported with the development of tools and resources including blog and worksheets, mentoring sessions, and professional learning days. To June 2025, 266 students and 52 educators engaged in incursions and excursions, with 60 educators participating in interactive professional development sessions and/or mentoring. Pleasingly, 100% of educators noticed an increase in confidence in teaching earth and environmental science.

“It is only with sponsors like Evolution Mining that we can continue to make a lasting impact on our future earth and environmental scientists,” said AusEarthEd Chief Executive Officer Jo Watkins.
