To achieve our broader emissions reduction strategy, our teams actively assess and implement initiatives that enable operational efficiencies, emissions reductions and safer ways of working.
At our Cowal Gold Operations, we have implemented a retrofitted ventilation on demand system that dynamically adjusts airflow and fan speeds in response to real-time environmental monitoring data. With ~$12 million investment since FY24 at Cowal and more expected over the life of mine, the system will be progressively implemented throughout Cowal’s underground levels. The ventilation on demand equipment will be recovered and redeployed as levels open and close, reducing capital requirements.
The system has enabled real-time monitoring and verification of environmental data, real-time focusing of air where it is needed, reduced costs associated with leakage reduction, reduced energy consumption and emissions, and supported the safety of our people by reducing harmful air emissions. Over a 16-month period, Cowal reduced electricity consumption by ~43GWh, electricity costs by ~$5 million, and Scope 2 emissions.
The system has also enhanced the capability of our people to meet the growing need for future-ready skills in climate and technology. Employees and contractors collaborated to deliver training as the system was implemented, with training embedded in procedures and in a maintenance hub to ensure ongoing awareness and sustainability of the system. Cowal is continuously improving the system, including the tracking of vehicle beacons.
We are also supporting operational efficiencies through our involvement in the Caterpillar Pathways Sustainability Program, including participation in global learning events, early access to new technology and expert advisement of operational efficiency opportunities through the use of Caterpillar’s electrification modelling tools (simulation at Ernest Henry). We aim to leverage the learnings from these projects to enable efficiencies at our other operations.
