Evolution approved a Shared Value Project (SVP) at Mungari to support the Goldfields Women’s Refuge (GWR) in Kalgoorlie, with the aim to help save lives. The SVP, The Hope Project, aims to increase the capacity of the GWR and provide additional housing to women and children escaping domestic violence or at risk of homelessness. It comes amid high rates of domestic violence incidents and related mortality rates across the Western Australian Goldfields.
The Hope Project is designed to combat devastating community impacts of domestic violence with the establishment of transitional (medium-term) and emergency accommodation, which will involve the instalment of six private-access units within three two-story townhouses. The new units will provide safety, space and security to women, children, and transgender persons, escaping horrific situations, and almost double the capacity of the facility. The SVP aims to support communities across neighbouring shires in the long term and well beyond the life of mine. Mungari’s team is proud to support both this project as an extension to our existing support for the Refuge in November 2022 via a successful White Ribbon fundraising drive.
The Minister for Communities, Sabine Winton, and Local State MP Ali Kent joined local Indigenous Elder Aubrey Lynch and other members of the government for the official launch of the project, and ‘turning of the dirt’, on March 10.
The refuge will accommodate women with complex issues and provide survivors with wrap-around support services, including access to specialist mental health care to help reduce the rate of women returning to the crisis centre. Additionally, the refuge hopes to increase the economic independence of survivors and support them as they get their lives back on track.
